LES Selkirk can’t help collecting things. He’s been doing it for decades. And so he should, he’s an antique dealer. JULIE SAMARAS asked him to share some of his special treasures.
Wellington chest made of Pollard oak circa 1850s from England. A side flap moves across and locks, preventing the drawers from sliding out. “This is my wife Valerie’s favourite piece. We bought it on one of our trips to England together.”
Edison gramophone with brass trumpet, and wax cylinder, in working order made circa 1905. “Listening to music on this brings a whole other dimension to the experience.”
Royal Doulton limited edition figurine “The Jester” with bisque finish. “I bought it from Michael Doulton on one of his Australian visits. He brought it out as a special to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founder, Charles Doulton 1897-1997. The original series was made in 1942.”
Flame mahogany two-height bookcase on chiffonier base from England, circa 1870s. “It’s beautifully carved, small proportions. It took me five years to find this piece.”
