Winter trends to decorative ‘luxe’
Published in Lifestyle - Home on 17 July, 2008

THE trend for winter interiors is rich textural fabrics of linens, sateens, velvets and felts; pattern is strong and complex, almost retro; colours are all about strong neutrals highlighted by saturated brights such as burnt orange, ruby fuchsia and golden ochre.
Australian paint company Taubmans has predicted a move away from the clean neutrals of recent years into an era of decorative “luxe” (French for opulence).
Warm whites are being replaced with soft linens, washed sand and aged stone. Team these neutrals with robust hues such as burnt orange, golden ochre, verdant olive or ruby fuchsia for visual interest.
Taubmans suggests to start a colour theme by picking a favourite fabric, e.g. a gold and linen patterned cushion in an open-weave cotton will set the tone for linen-coloured walls with perhaps a single wall in ochre and decorative elements in chocolate, honey and orange.
Another colour scheme is that of olive, ruby fuchsia and softer sage green; works a treat with more dramatic furniture in black or a warm charcoal and fabrics in rich velvets, silks and satins.

Highlight strong neutrals with saturated brights, such as burnt orange.
