Message: MELBOURNE Cup Day saw Canberra’s fashionistas turn out in force, with more than 13,100 attending the festivities at Thoroughbred Park. Sophie Harding took out the Fashions on the Field award in the “Classic Ladies’ Racewear” section, attracting the judges’ notice with a pink dress and pillbox hat. Brittney McGlone won the trend-driven “Miss Racegoer” category, while Charles Bennett beat 34 contenders to win the “Classic Men’s Racewear” category. Briony Young, sales and marketing manager at Thoroughbred Park, says that Canberrans have responded favourably to the changes to Fashion on the Field’s rules, and that visitors in general were putting much more thought into their outfits than in previous years. “People are tending more towards classic race wear, and glamming up, not down,” she says. There will be another opportunity to compete at the Canberra Cup, on Sunday, November 30. The winner of the classic ladies’ race wear category will receive a $1000 Myer voucher and $500 cash, while the winner of the men’s category will take home a plasma-screen television. To be eligible to enter, particularly in the “Classic Ladies’ Racewear” category, racegoers need to apply certain key points: • style and originality; • a hat or fascinator (or this year’s must, a hatinator!); • appropriateness of outfit – no miniskirts! • no denim; and • a lot of exposed skin is not classic racewear.
